Play Play Play

A programme created in direct response to the increases in mental heath problems in children due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Everything that we do in the recovery needs to support children to build resilience, work through trauma, make friends and enjoy themselves. Play is the way that children do all those things so giving them the space, time and permission to play is the best thing that we can do
— Anita Grant, Chair of Play England

Play, Play, Play is an immersive, outdoor play programme, designed to creatively connect children with their surrounding environment, allowing them an opportunity to explore the natural world in a psychologically safe and contained space. Through imaginative play and adventurous learning the programme aims to support Primary School children transition back into formal learning settings post Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

PlayFirstUK correctly identify that social connection and play offer myriad learning opportunities and are positively associated with children’s academic attainment and literacy.

Recent research indicates children with access to the natural environment decreases symptoms of ADHD (2004), moderates the impact of stressful events in children and sees improvements in:

  • confidence

  • social interactions

  • cognitive development

  • academic achievement

  • emotional wellbeing

In addition to the benefits of working with nature, by offering them a place where they can creatively explore

  • rituals

  • storytelling

  • den-making

  • map building

  • mask-work

  • dramatic play

the programme allows the children to access the subconscious, support healing of past negative experiences and help them move forward with their lives. We believe this programme is vital in supporting children not only with their short term social development and academic learning post Covid-19 lockdown, but also with their long-term relationship to their own physical and mental health.

Play Play Play is facilitated by our resident drama specialist, who has over 10 years of experience, working with children in organisations such as The Royal Shakespeare Company, Shakespeare’s Globe and The Old Vic Theatre.

Our sessions run weekly throughout the school term and last for approximately 2.5 hours each.
